Neither one of us said much as we consumed our meal. I could have been eating cardboard for all I tasted. I usually loved Chinese food, but I had lost my appetite as I attempted to eat something. I took a few sips from the wine he had poured to enjoy with our meal. The silence was getting next to me, so I stood and took my dishes into the kitchen and placed them into the kitchen sink.

David soon followed behind me and placed his dishes into the sink, as well. I reached for the bottle of dish detergent, when he stilled my hands with his own. “Leave the dishes; I will tend to them later. Come with me,” he took my hand in his once again and led me into the living room. “Have a seat,” he gently ordered.

He paced back and forth in front of me as I sat there looking up at his tall muscular frame. He had discarded his business attire earlier, replacing it with a pair of snug jeans that did his form justice and a buttoned down shirt. He took a deep breath and finally decided to speak.

“I met and fell in love with Alyssa Darden years ago when she moved to New York from Auburn, Alabama. She wanted to start a new life and get as far away from the man who hurt and betrayed her. We were friends at first and then we fell in love.

She was the one I thought I would marry and spend the rest of my life with, until her best friend died and she went back home after twelve long years to attend her funeral.” He paused as if to clear his thoughts before he began to speak again. “I wanted to attend the funeral with her, but I had just received my promotion at the bank. We both thought it wasn’t a good time for me to take time off.

To make a long story short, she met back up with the man that hurt and betrayed her. She never got over him and he never got over her, it seems. She came back here after the funeral. Nothing was ever the same again. I felt it and one thing led to another. I was insecure and I cheated on her. She caught me with the woman. The woman I cheated with didn’t mean anything to me. I did it just to soothe my ego, I suppose."

I was in deep turmoil, as I listened to David go on and on about this beautiful woman. He must have loved her deeply and maybe he loved her deeply still. I didn’t want him to love that woman. I wanted him to love me and only me.

He continued to talk and I put aside my jealously to really listen to him. “I felt that I was losing Alyssa long before I lost her. I grew desperate and did something I never thought in a million years that I would be capable of.
